The Punjab government is preparing to introduce tough new penalties for traffic violations, with fines set to increase significantly and a points-based license suspension system being implemented. A summary from the traffic police has already cleared departmental approvals and is now awaiting final approval from the provincial cabinet.
This move comes as part of efforts to improve road safety and discipline, replacing the outdated system where most fines ranged between Rs. 100 to Rs. 500. The government plans to modernize the process through e-challaning, ending manual challans once the system is in place.
Under the proposed fines, 25 different violations will carry penalties ranging from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 20,000. Offenders will also face license point deductions, with suspensions ranging from two months to one year if they lose 20 points within a year.
Key Penalties Announced:
Violation | Fine Range (Rs.) | Points Deducted |
Overspeeding | 2,000 – 20,000 | 4 |
Signal Violation / Wrong Way | 2,000 – 15,000 | 4 |
Rash Driving | 3,000 – 15,000 | 4 |
Overloading | 2,000 – 15,000 | 4 |
Pressure Horn Use | 2,000 – 10,000 | 2 |
Officials believe this step will bring discipline to Punjab’s roads, while critics may question whether enforcement and awareness will match the new penalties. The upcoming system marks a major shift in Punjab’s traffic regulation, aiming to reduce violations and accidents. Once approved, drivers will have to rethink reckless behavior to avoid heavy fines and license suspensions.
“Road safety should be our top priority. These fines are not just penalties, they are deterrents,” said a senior traffic official.
