The federal government has taken a major step forward in its power sector reforms by introducing measures designed to cut power costs for consumers.
As part of the initiative, the government has launched an auction mechanism for 800 MW of wheeling demand, marking the first step toward competitive bidding in the electricity market.
Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Owais Leghari inaugurated a workshop on the competitive framework, emphasizing that these reforms are essential for stabilizing electricity tariffs and making energy more affordable.
He highlighted that the export sector will gain access to low-cost renewable energy, while large industrial users will benefit from a transparent and efficient market system.
Underscoring the government’s consumer-focused agenda, the minister declared 2025–26 as the customer service year and described the introduction of a free power market as a landmark reform that will help reduce power costs and strengthen Pakistan’s long-term energy security.
