Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has announced that Pakistan Railways will outsource passenger trains through an open auction system to improve efficiency and revenue generation. He said the institution is moving forward despite limited resources, crediting the progress to strong commitment and careful planning.
During a high-level meeting at Railways Headquarters, the minister approved reforms aimed at modernizing operations. Existing contracts will be reviewed under the new outsourcing plan, while annual revenue targets for passenger trains will also be revised. A special committee has been formed to oversee the process.
To enhance safety, the Safety Department has been upgraded to the status of a Directorate, with new staff and officers appointed. Abbasi also emphasized the importance of staff welfare, ordering immediate improvements to rest houses for guards and drivers in Rohri, Khanpur, and Khanewal, including air conditioning, kitchens, and dining facilities.
On the freight side, the minister confirmed that 295 high capacity wagons will be added by March 30, with freight booking fully shifting to an online platform next week. For passengers, new AC Standard and AC Parlor coaches are being introduced on the Shalimar Express, while refurbished coaches for the Lahore–Rawalpindi railcars will be launched by November 11.
Abbasi expressed confidence that these reforms will bring visible improvements in both freight and passenger services, making Railways more efficient, transparent, and passenger-friendly.
