This fixture marks a historic moment for the Umuahia-based club, who are making their maiden appearance on the continental stage. But the draw has handed them a tough test against Djoliba, one of Africa’s most experienced clubs.

Founded in 1960, Djoliba are the most successful team in Mali with 24 league titles and 20 national cups. On the continent, they have played 168 matches across various CAF competitions, winning 63. Their biggest achievement came in 2012 when they reached the CAF Confederation Cup final, narrowly losing to AC Léopards of Congo.

Djoliba are well known for their physical strength, technical ability, and for producing top players for the Malian national team. Their pedigree contrasts with Abia Warriors’ lack of international experience, making this a stern test for the Nigerian debutants.

The tie will be played over two legs, with the return leg set for Sunday, September 28, at Stade Mamadou Konaté in Bamako. Winners on aggregate will progress to the second preliminary round in October, with hopes of reaching the group stage in November.

Abia Warriors, coached by Imama Amakpakabo, have started the NPFL season with two wins from four matches. Imama will be banking on the likes of Ali Ishaku, Imoh Obot, Casmir Azubuike, Yakub Hammed, Fatai Abdullahi, Gabriel Innocent, Chimezie Njoku, Emmanuel Ogbuagu, Osahon Osaoboh, Paul Samson, and Lawal Suraju to rise to the occasion and make history for the club.

The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium is not new to hosting international football. It serves as the home ground of the Super Eagles of Nigeria and has also staged continental games involving Akwa United, Enyimba FC, Rivers United, and Enugu Rangers. Abia Warriors will now add their name to that list, though they are playing in Uyo because their Umuahia Township Stadium was declared unfit for continental football.
