Apple’s iOS 26 introduces a smart feature for the Home app called Adaptive Temperature. It automatically adjusts thermostat settings when users leave or return home.

To enable the feature, users must open the Home app, select a thermostat, go to settings, and tap Adaptive Temperature. With permission, it can switch between modes such as Cool, Heat, Auto, and Off. It can also predict arrivals based on daily schedules and adjust temperatures using occupancy sensors if available.

Apple says[1] Adaptive Temperature relies on Activity History to determine if someone is home. The thermostat works in three states: “home” when someone is inside, “away” when no one is home, and “extended away” when the house is empty for over 24 hours or all members are far from home.

Although Activity History tracks state changes, it does not log specific arrivals or departures. If users disable location sharing, Activity History cannot trigger Adaptive Temperature.

It remains unclear whether the feature is fully operational or requires updates from thermostat manufacturers. Several Reddit users[2] report they cannot find Adaptive Temperature settings in the Home app.
