Threads, Meta’s text-based app, is expanding its direct message (DM) functionality. The app now has an optional setting that allows users to receive message requests from anyone on the platform.
These new settings, which are rolling out to all users with DMs enabled, is a significant shift from the previous restriction that only permitted messages from mutual followers on Threads or Instagram.
What Changes Are Coming to Threads?
- Expanded access: Previously, users could only exchange direct messages with people they followed on Threads or had a mutual follower connection with on Instagram.
- Opt-in setting: You can toggle on/off a setting called “message requests from anyone” to enable DMs from anyone. Users who have already activated DMs may see a popup prompting them to enable this new setting, but it is not mandatory.
- Dedicated inbox: To help manage potential spam or unwanted messages, requests from users you don’t follow will land in a separate “Message Requests” inbox, keeping your main feed organized.
- Age requirement: The DM feature remains limited to users aged 18 and over.
New Threads DM Settings: How It Effects Users
For creators, professionals, and those looking to expand their network, this change offers new opportunities for connection and discovery.
However, with this expanded access comes a heightened risk of spam or unwanted messages. To address this, Threads is providing users with enhanced controls to block, mute, and filter messages.
How to Manage Your Settings
Users concerned about privacy or spam can manage their experience with several built-in controls:
- Manage who can message you: You can turn off message requests from people you don’t follow by adjusting your message settings at any time.
- Hidden folder: Threads will use automated systems to filter potentially harmful or spam messages into a separate hidden folder.
- Block and mute: Existing tools for blocking and muting users remain available for managing unwanted interactions.
Threads had introduced the option to DM followers a couple of months back. Before that, there was no way to communicate between users on the side.
