August 2025 is upon us, but before we put July behind us completely, let’s take a look back at some of the biggest memes of the past week.

This week on social media, Twitter got obsessed with a so-called Japanese salarywoman, Sydney Sweeney’s Great Jeans got American Eagle some not-so-great press, Undertale got its own Graggle Simpson with Togore Dreemurr and more.

Here’s the five biggest memes of the last week of July 2025 for you to catch up on.

Lizard Lizard Lizard

The post-credit scene from the well-reviewed box office bomb Elio has inspired a meme, not that it’ll help make back its budget.

The scene shows a lizard inputting lizard Emojis into a phone as a text-to-speech voice repeatedly says, “Lizard, lizard, lizard.” This past week, TikTokers took the scene, turned the lizard hitting the Emoji into a green screen and turned that into a meme. Basically, the animation is used to represent someone repeatedly smacking or pressing something, with examples including a drunk person hitting the crosswalk button, someone spam-clicking “refresh” when a website doesn’t work and someone rapidly honking their horn at another car.

As far as green screens go, TikTokers are getting a lot of use out of this one, resulting in a flood of examples on the app in just a week. Quick, someone pull a Morbius and put the movie back in theaters! Surely it’ll sell more tickets now, right?

Japanese Salarywoman Saori Araki

Japanese model and former J-pop idol Saori Araki stole the hearts of Twitter last week with a simple photo of herself in a grey suit.

The photo, which shows Araki with short hair and her cheeks puffed up, took social media by storm and quickly became one of the biggest images online. People just couldn’t stop thirsting for her, resulting in edits, memes and everything in between. There’s really nothing special about the photo outside of its virality, but it’s hard to ignore just how intensely it spread in the past week. This also inspired a lot of memes making fun of people for obsessing over Araki.

Its virality even inspired Araki to make a YouTube video responding to all her new fans, which gained over 240,000 views in just a few days.

Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans

On the other side of the coin, actress Sydney Sweeney got the internet all fired up after she appeared in an ad for American Eagle jeans that some people thought was one big dog whistle.

In the ad, Sydney Sweeney poses in some mildly suggestive ways while talking about jeans and genes, playing with the words interchangeably. A lot of people think the ad is inspired by a 1980s ad campaign that features Brooke Shields saying some very similar things. Regardless of the intention, the internet tore apart the ads when they dropped, suggesting that all the talk about Sweeney having “great jeans” is a white supremacist dog whistle about white people being a superior race.

All the controversy was met with mixed reactions. Some people went all-in on the hate train towards American Eagle and Sweeney, while others suggested that maybe people were jumping to conclusions and failing to understand that the ad is mostly just joking about Sweeney’s chest.

Togore Dreemurr

Once again, Deltarune and Undertale fans ate well last week as another spicy meme concoction, known as Togore Dreemurr went viral as the fandom’s answer to Graggle Simpson.

The meme requires some context to fully grasp exactly what’s going on. Basically, in the games, the characters Toriel and Asgore have a child named Asriel. “Asriel” is a combination of both of their names, taking the beginning of “Asgore” and the end of “Toriel” and mashing them together. Well, what if they took the other parts of their names and mashed those together instead? It would read “Togore,” which is a much more disgusting and unacceptable name, as far as the fandom is concerned. Jokes about the possible name started popping up shortly after Undertale’s release, but they started blowing up this week thanks to the recent release of chapters three and four of Deltarune.

Fans started making memes and art about Togore, with some trying to gaslight people into believing that he’s a real character. A lot of people drew him based on a piece of pixel art depicting him as a wide-eyed goat-boy, giving life to the meme. Now, please, someone get this freak off my screen.

U.K. Online Safety Age Verification Law

Finally, the U.K’s online safety age verification law was put into effect this last week, causing absolute chaos for the Brits.

The law means that internet users in the U.K. need to provide age verification by going through facial‑age estimation AI or providing a photo ID to access not just adult sites, but also social media sites like Discord, Reddit and Twitter. A lot of people are pretty angry about this and it’s evident from the online responses, which includes a lot of outrage, methods of attempting to bypass the law and, of course, memes.

One of the most interesting results is the use of realistic animations and depictions of people’s faces to bypass the AI facial estimation programs. For example, some people have been scanning Norman Reedus’ face from Death Stranding 2 to successfully bypass verification on Discord. Others simply gave up and mourned their loss of access to sites like Rule34. Truly, we are living in dark times.
