“No One Mourns the Wicked” is the opening song from the musical Wicked[1]. The song, composed by Stephen Schwartz, sees the Munchkins and Glinda sing in celebration of the Wicked Witch of the West’s death. In September 2025, the song experienced a surge in popularity on sites like TikTok after the assassination of Charlie Kirk[2], a controversial right wing voice, as a way of celebrating his death.
Origin
On October 30th, 2003, Wicked made its Broadway debut. The opening number in the musical is titled “No One Mourns the Wicked” and sees Glinda and the munchkins sing about the death of the Wicked Witch of the West and how “no one mourns the wicked.” The song also features in the 2024 film adaptation of the musical, in which Ariana Grande plays Glinda.

Popularity Post-Charlie Kirk’s Death
On September 10th, 2025, right wing political figure and Turning Point USA[3] founder Charlie Kirk was assassinated during an event at Utah Valley University. In response, some people who opposed Kirk’s political viewpoints began using the song as a way of celebrating his death.
For example, that day, TikToker @musicboyfriend posted a video lip dubbing to the song, the video description reading, “unrelated to current events 🥸,” the Emoji[4] suggesting that it is, in fact, related to Kirk’s death, garnering over 485,000 views in a day.

Shortly after, TikToker @sharttbug posted a similar video set to the song captioned, “God forbid a girl enjoys some cruel irony,” garnering over 627,000 views in a day.

On September 11th, X user @_layomi_ quoted a post about Kristin Chenoweth’s reaction to Kirk’s death, writing, “does she know what song people have been streaming since his death was announced?” garnering over 69,000 likes in under a day. The post is referring to the increase in popularity of “No One Mourns the Wicked.”

That day, the @BuzzingPop X account made a post claiming that streams of the song had raised 50% since September 10th, garnering over 197,000 likes in a day. Later that day, X user @GianmarcoSoresi quoted the same post as @_layomi_, writing, “Okay one person mourns the wicked,” garnering over 45,000 likes in a day.
