Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared that the smartphone era is nearing its end. He said smart glasses will soon replace phones because they offer a simpler, more natural way for people to experience technology.
Zuckerberg emphasized this shift will allow users to free their hands and lift their heads away from screens. He described the first benefits as physical, no more constant screen-glancing or carrying phones everywhere. In his new world, glasses will be a familiar accessory that will evolve into much more.
Zuckerberg Think The Shift Will Happen Soon
This is not the first time he has stressed the end of smartphones. He has expressed his views openly in many interviews and podcasts about how he thinks this transformation will take place gradually, all throughout the 2030s. Instead of a sudden switch, he envisions a hybrid era where both phones and glasses coexist, giving users time to adjust. This measured approach, he argues, will help consumers adapt to the idea of wearing technology on their faces daily.
In this regard, Meta has already released Ray-Ban Stories and Ray-Ban Meta. These glasses record video, translate spoken language in real time, listen passively, and display augmented reality information. According to Zuckerberg, these devices will make travel and communication easier, though they may blur the lines between virtual experience and reality.
Zuckerberg linked this strategy to market trends. He noted a drop in phone sales and slowing production, with new phone models delivering only incremental improvements. He argued people no longer want to change phones often.
Why Isn’t the Shift Happening Now
Meta recognizes price remains a major barrier for many people around the world to switch to AR glasses. The company is investing billions into Project Orion AR, aiming to lead this new computing era and reduce dependence on companies like Apple or Google.
Meta hopes to lower prices and push smart glasses into mass adoption within three to five years. By 2030, Zuckerberg expects up to 25 percent of users will have switched to smart glasses.
