Nigeria

Former Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, has called on the federal government to dissolve the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) if the national team fails to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria’s chances of qualifying are slim after a 1-1 draw with South Africa in their latest Group C match. The Super Eagles now sit third in the group, six points behind South Africa, with only two games left to play.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel blamed the NFF for the team’s poor performance in the qualifiers.

“If Nigeria doesn’t qualify for the World Cup, the entire NFF board has to go… it’s unacceptable,” he said.

“We didn’t qualify for the last World Cup in Qatar, and now it looks like we won’t make it again. Honestly, I have nothing more to say about it.”

Mikel believes the NFF has failed to organise things properly and that changes are needed if Nigerian football is to move forward.
