The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that all unregistered mobile devices will soon be blocked from local networks, urging citizens to register their phones through the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) to ensure uninterrupted service. This step is part of PTA’s ongoing efforts to safeguard national security and prevent misuse of mobile devices in financial and cyber crimes.

Unregistered mobile phones, which operate outside the official system, pose risks including illegal usage, fraud, and potential threats to national security. Under existing regulations, possession, sale, or use of such devices is considered illegal and punishable. The PTA has emphasized that citizens must avoid buying or selling unregistered phones, as these devices cannot lawfully connect to any telecom network.

Consumers are urged to check the registration status of their devices on the DIRBS portal and complete registration promptly. Failure to comply may result in service suspension or legal action. PTA officials have highlighted that this initiative will not only curb illegal mobile usage but also strengthen regulatory oversight, improve tracking of mobile devices, and enhance cybersecurity across Pakistan’s telecom sector.

Experts note that similar measures in other countries have successfully reduced mobile-related fraud and smuggling, while improving consumer protection and network security. The PTA has stressed that timely compliance is crucial, and users are encouraged to act now to avoid disruption of mobile services.
