Jannik Sinner overcame a small injury scare to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime and reach the US Open final, where he will face Carlos Alcaraz once again.
Sinner, the defending champion, didn’t play his best tennis but still managed to win 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The 24-year-old Italian has now won 26 of his 27 Grand Slam matches this year. He has already won the Australian Open and Wimbledon and was runner-up at the French Open, where he lost to Alcaraz.
A match of ups and downs
Sinner started strong and took the first set easily. But he struggled in the second set and seemed to be bothered by an injury. Auger-Aliassime took advantage and levelled the match.
Sinner took a medical timeout before the third set, then came back and played more comfortably – though not at his very best.
In the fourth set, Sinner looked fitter and more focused. He broke serve at the right time and held on to win.
Looking ahead to another final with Alcaraz
Sinner will now play Carlos Alcaraz in the final on Sunday. Alcaraz had earlier beaten Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
Speaking after the match, Sinner said:
“Sunday will be another special day and a great final. My injury isn’t anything serious, so we’ll see how it goes.”
He also talked about his rivalry with Alcaraz:
“I feel like our rivalry really started here in 2022. We’re both different players now, more confident, and we know each other very well.”
A place in tennis history
With this win, Sinner becomes just the fourth player in the Open Era to reach all four Grand Slam finals in the same year, joining legends Rod Laver, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
Although Sinner has achieved a lot this season, he still trails Alcaraz in their head-to-head record. Alcaraz has won 9 of their 14 matches, including 3 of their 4 meetings in 2025.
