Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1534) is… PETAL.
Here’s another fairly easy Wordle after yesterday’s ELATE (3.9) and Thursday’s SPLIT (3.5), which sandwiched the more difficult GRAFT (4.2).
But actually is any of that really true? ELATE and SPLIT both had low averages, but that doesn’t necessarily make them easier than GRAFT, it just implies that more people found them easier to solve, a factor which usually has more to do with start word performance than with the words themselves.
With that in mind and to return to today’s PETAL, I’d place it as easier than ELATE, GRAFT or SPLIT, although its average of 3.5 matches the latter. After all, I scored a three despite a truly shocking start word result.
My randomly selected BUNNY was never likely to be among the best starters, but today it left more than 1,400, which may well be the most I’ve ever had to contend with.
But contend with it I did; I played LATER next and it cut those many options down to a trio of METAL, PETAL AND FETAL.
I didn’t think the latter was likely, because the NYT has previously removed the word FETUS from being a solution. That was on a specific day, and it’s possible it will still be included – plus, FETAL is a different word anyway and may be treated differently. But still, I decided it was less likely, so took a risk and went with PETAL thinking that even if wrong I’d probably still score a four with METAL.
I needn’t have worried anyway – because PETAL was right, meaning I scored my three.
Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1533)
In a different time zone where it’s still Saturday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1533, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in three places.

We don’t get many Wordle answers that start with an E – though it’s the most common letter in the game, it’s only the 14th most likely to begin a solution.
- There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1533) was… ELATE.
There are days when the best Wordle start words[8] just make the game too easy, and today is one of those.
SLATE, WordleBot’s favored opener and the sixth most popular choice among the public today, left only two options – PLATE and ELATE. STARE, the third most common starting guess, left only five. Between them, those two words accounted for 6% of all first guesses – so that’s going to have skewed the average considerably.
I’m writing this very early in the day, so it may go higher over time, but right now the average for ELATE is a mere 2.9 – making it one of only four Wordles ever to have dipped below 3.0. (Note – it did go higher; much higher, to 3.9.)
Two of the other three were SLATE and PLATE (the other was CHASE), so that -LATE format is statistically the easiest in the game, albeit not the easiest for everyone who plays; if you begin with AUDIO or ADIEU you’ll have had a harder time of it today.
I didn’t start with either of those, or SLATE, or STARE, because my random word generator told me to play ABLED. But I didn’t have a terrible time of it myself, with three letters turning yellow and my shortlist cut to 61.
It made sense to put those three yellows into their most common positions – so -LA-E. I nearly played SLATE, but knew it had been a past Wordle answer[9] so skipped it and went with PLATE.
My decision paid off: the L, A, T and E all turned green, meaning I only had two words left to choose from: SLATE and ELATE. And I’d already mentally ruled out the former, so played the latter for my three.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2022 and is still going strong in 2025.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle[11] page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website[12] or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS[13] / Android[14]), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
