About
Average Male Fantasy refers to a catchphrase and cliché used in memes that depict the average male fantasy as something non-perverse, wholesome, endearing or funny, subverting expectations and playing off the common assumption that the average male fantasy is always sexual. Throughout the 2010s and 2020s, several meme formats were popularized that played with the idea of the average male fantasy, including the Video Games Appeal to the Male Fantasy format and the Every Man Has 2 Fantasies meme. In May 2025, the concept inspired memes on X / Twitter after a user made a post writing, “‘All men just have perverted fantasies…’ | The average male fantasy:,” using a wholesome piece of content to represent the average male fantasy.
Origin
Video Games Appeal to the Male Fantasy
On April 23rd, 2015, BuzzFeed Yellow published a video titled “Feminists Play Grand Theft Auto For The First Time.” In the video, several presenters express shock and disgust at some of the game’s violence and the way it objectifies women. About halfway through the video, one presenter, Claudia Restrepo from the blog Oscar Hates Sexism, plays through a scene that takes place at a strip club, commenting negatively about it.
On August 29th, 2016, YouTuber punpun paired the clip of Claudia talking about the male fantasy with a clip from Just Cause 3 of the main character attaching bombs to an enemy’s crotch and watching him fly away, representing it as the “male fantasy” that she is talking about. The video gained over 2.3 million views in nine years. The meme went on to inspire many variants in the following years.

Every Man Has 2 Fantasies
On August 31st, 2021, Redditor u/Straight_Orchid2934 posted a meme to the /r/dankmemes subreddit captioned, “Every man has 2 fantasies,” which used a Warhammer 40,000 artwork depicting Lord Commander Solar Macharius of the Imperial Guard and a drawing of a woman consoling a man. The images were captioned in contrasting ways, one illustrating the desire to give one’s life in a battle for a greater purpose, and the other showing a desire to comfortably open up emotionally. The post garnered over 60,500 upvotes in a month.

The meme became a prevalent exploitable format over the following years, in which the images representing the two male fantasies are replaced.
