McDonald’s is one of the biggest brands across the globe, boasting more than 40,000 restaurants worldwide, but they once opened their very own hotel with futuristic features

There are over 40,000 McDonald’s restaurants across the globe, offering some of our favourites fast food meals, from the beloved Big Mac to the Chicken Legend Burger. But also found under the famed golden arches was once a hotel – the first and only in the world.

Found in Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland, the Golden Arch Hotel was sensationally opened by McDonald’s in 2001. Costing an estimated £12 million to build, it boasted 211 beds and was dubbed a four-star establishment.

Despite the brand’s huge target market of families, the hotel was designed more as a business hotel and was built near Zurich Airport. Inside, there were subtle signs of the beloved fast food chain, but many travellers checking in would recognise it as the brand for the huge sign that gleamed on the outside of the hotel.

And without a doubt, it came complete with not one, but two McDonald’s restaurants for all those fast-food needs. Even though its rooms were some of the cheapest in the area, at around £75 per night, the Golden Arch Hotel sadly closed just two years after opening.

We’ve taken a look back inside the famed McDonald’s hotel, which once planned to open more establishments…
