Today’s Wordle answer (game #1529) is… ANNEX.
With only 37 letter Xs among Wordle’s 2,309 original answers, you’d only expect one every 62 games. And usually, their appearances have been in that ballpark; there were 40 games between the previous one, EXTOL, and EXILE before that, 30 between the latter and VIXEN, 54 between that word and INBOX and 105 separating that and RELAX. Some gaps have been shorter, some longer – but none so short as the five between EXTOL and today’s ANNEX.
It’s not exactly a welcome visitor, either, given that today’s average score of 4.2 implies people are struggling to solve ANNEX. That’s the same figure as that for yesterday’s MIRTH, but given the combination of the repeated N and the uncommon final letter I wouldn’t be surprised to see its score rise over the course of the day.
Then again, WordleBot managed a three – and that was despite its opening SLATE leaving 140 answers. I would have gladly taken that, though; my SWOOP left 1,281 of them!
That’s a purely theoretical number in Wordle terms, and obviously I didn’t attempt to find them all – or even any of them. Instead, I just looked at my unplayed letters and went with LATER in order to include five of the most common remaining, and in a likely order.
LATER worked really well, cutting down that list by more than 1,200 in one fell swoop and leaving only seven. It took me a while to see that there were so few, though – with only two letters in place, and both of them vowels, there was very little structure to the board.
I decided to focus on letters that could go after the green E. R and L, two of the most likely candidates, were already ruled out – and I didn’t think it would end with a D, either.
Instead, I came up with ADIEU and ANNEX, but no others. The ‘Bot also had ABBEY, which I should have found, plus four D words: ADDED, AIDED, ACHED and AIMED; I doubt any will be real solutions though.
I couldn’t recall ADIEU having been a past Wordle answer (it hasn’t), so went with that and turned the A green. I also ruled out those unlikely D-ending answers, leaving me with only ANNEX and ABBEY. I still hadn’t thought of the latter, though, so played ANNEX and scored a slightly lucky four.
Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1528)
In a different time zone where it’s still Monday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1528, too.
- Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.

M is a middling letter when it comes to starting a word. It sits 10th in the rankings, with 107 occurrences in the 2,309 answers.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was H.
H is a regular visitor to the final spot in a Wordle word. It occurs 137 times at the end of a Wordle answer, making it the sixth most common letter there.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1528) was… MIRTH.
Welcome to the latest exciting instalment of ‘Marc picks a great start word at random and has a much easier time of it than everyone else does’!
We’ve had a few of these lately, but this stands out on account of MIRTH seemingly proving to be really quite a tough one in general. WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.3, and the ‘Bot itself only managed a four – whereas I got a three.
My secret sauce was the fact that my opener, TRAMP, included T, R and M – thus giving me three yellows and leaving only 10 possible solutions.
I found all 10 of them, but missed one. Wait, that doesn’t make sense. Okay, so what we have here is an example of the ‘Bot’s occasionally weird attitude towards the word list.
We both found nine of the same words, namely MIRTH, MERIT, METRE, METER, MITER, MOTOR, REMIT, STRUM and STORM. I missed METRO – which was quite the oversight given that it’s not exactly an uncommon word – but instead had MITRE on my list and indeed played that next time out.
Now, MITRE is the UK spelling of MITER – so in a sense, I can understanding the ‘Bot leaving it out given that it’s a US-based AI (if such a thing exists; after all, its home is the internet, and that’s global).
However, it included both US and UK spellings of METER/METRE – so why not also MITER/MITRE? No idea, but it’s an inconsistency.
MITRE seemed to me the best word to play next and indeed it did the job in that it guaranteed me a three. The question of whether or not it could itself have been the solution will have to be answered on another day…

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2022 and is still going strong in 2025.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
