Quentin Tarantino explained that one of the reason he stepped back from The Movie Critic because he thought the concept of The Movie Critic was a personal challenge to make an interesting film about a seemingly uninteresting profession. He questioned if he could make a movie or a television show about a movie critic captivating to an audience on the Church of Tarantino podcast. Although he believes he achieved this goal with the script, the lack of a production challenge led him to walk away from the project.  

Quentin Tarantino has clarified that his shelved film, The Movie Critic, had no direct narrative connection to his previous movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Another major reason for scrapping the project was that it did not present the same creative challenge. For Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he was motivated by the difficult task of recreating 1969 Los Angeles without relying on CGI. He felt he had already mastered this kind of period filmmaking and that The Movie Critic, set in 1977, offered no new creative puzzle to solve, which he considers essential for his passion projects.
