Paris Saint-Germain began the new season with another trophy after beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. The match, played at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy, finished 2-2 after a dramatic late comeback by the European champions.
Tottenham, in their first competitive game under new coach Thomas Frank, looked set for victory after Micky van de Ven opened the scoring in the 39th minute and Cristian Romero added a second three minutes into the second half.
PSG fought back through two substitutes, with Lee Kang-in scoring in the 85th minute and Goncalo Ramos heading in the equaliser in stoppage time.
In the penalty shoot-out, PSG’s Vitinha missed their first kick, but new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier saved from Van de Ven, and Mathys Tel also missed for Spurs. Nuno Mendes scored the winning penalty after successful spot-kicks from Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, and Lee. Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro converted for Spurs in vain.
It is the first time PSG, or any French club, has lifted the UEFA Super Cup. The win adds to PSG’s tally of five trophies in 2025, following their Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Champions League, and Trophee des Champions triumphs.
Luis Enrique’s side now prepare to start their Ligue 1 season away to Nantes on Sunday, while Tottenham host Burnley in their Premier League opener on Saturday.
