About

Is They Cutting refers to a series of Google Search Suggestions[1] memes[2] and viral posts about the supposed Google[3] Search auto-suggestions for the sentence prefix “Is they cutting…” showing questions written in improper grammar about U.S.[4] government subsidies (such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP) like “Is They Cutting Food Stamps?” and “Is They Cutting EBT?” The meme is a variant of the precursor Is We Getting[5] meme, based on the purported search suggestions “Is we getting food stamps?” and “Is we getting another stimulus check?” which first trended in 2020.

The Is They Cutting meme surfaced on Twitter / X[6] in October 2025, when internet[7] users resurfaced the Is We Getting meme and found the alternate amid the U.S. government shutdown. The jokes were largely at the expense of low-income African Americans, who some internet users believed were responsible for the supposed Google auto-suggestions.

Origin

On October 27th, 2025, X user @EndWokeness tweeted a screenshot of a Google search for the term “Is they cutting,” showing purported auto-suggestions, leading with, “Is they cutting food stamps?” @EndWokeness captioned the image, “Top search results. No, this is not satire,” receiving over 18,000 likes in two days.

At the time, the U.S. government shutdown was reportedly going to affect food stamps in the country.

Precursor

On August 1st, 2020, a 4chan[8] user shared a screenshot on the /pol/[9] (politically incorrect) imageboard, which showed a supposed Google Search suggestion, reading, “Is we getting a second stimulus checks?” The suggestion was about stimulus checks administered by the U.S. government during the COVID-19 Pandemic[10]. The user captioned it, “This is the current state of America,” and received several replies.

In subsequent years, several 4chan users resurfaced the Is We Getting joke. It later spread to websites like X, notably when controversial right-wing pundit Nick Fuentes[11] posted, “Is we getting the Netflix[12] back,” on X on November 15th, 2024, gaining over 9,500 likes in 11 months.

The Is We Getting meme resurfaced en masse on October 25th, 2025, following a post from X user @hayasaka_aryan, which likely inspired @EndWokeness’ Is They Cutting tweet.

Later on October 27th, 2025, Facebook[16] user Kevin Steele shared an example of the Is They Cutting meme with a supposed screenshot of Google search results auto-completing a range of things related to food stamps and low-income housing, receiving nearly 60 reactions and 25 comments in 16 hours.

In his post, Steele claimed that the image was fake and wrote:

VIRAL SATIRICAL MEME is not true. Google doesn’t release exact real-time rankings, but aggregated tools like Exploding Topics confirm no SNAP-related spike in the top 100. And not this meme which has been shared tens of thousands of times today. It does not appear to be an accurate representation. Google doesn’t tell you what is being searched real-time. Google Trends show SNAP searches up 150% month-over-month but still niche compared to entertainment/news.

A variation of the "Is They Cutting X" meme, which trended online in late October 2025 during the U.S. government shutdown.

Is We Getting / Is We Getting Food Stamps?[17]

Is We Getting[18] refers to the start of a Google[19] search term phrasal template[20] written in improper grammar that is commonly auto-completed by Google to read Is We Getting Food Stamps? or Is We Getting a Stimulus Check? The sentence starter, “Is we getting,” was mockingly used by internet users and meme[21] creators largely at the expense of American Black people, as it was speculated that they were the ones searching up the questions. Internet users first discovered the Is We Getting phenomenon on 4chan[22] in the early 2020s. Notable right-wing influencers[23], like Nick Fuentes[24], commonly referenced the joke. It later went viral on Twitter / X[25] in October 2025, when a user tweeted a screenshot of Is We Getting Google search suggestions, leading with, “Is we getting food stamps this month?” concerning the ongoing U.S.[26] government shutdown.
