As winter draws near, residents of Sindh and Balochistan may soon face higher gas bills, with the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) seeking approval from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) for a significant tariff hike. The company has proposed an increase of Rs. 125.41 per MMBTU for the current financial year, citing rising operational costs and growing seasonal demand.
If approved, the average gas price for consumers in both provinces would reach Rs. 1,783.96 per MMBTU, marking another potential burden for households already coping with inflationary pressures. OGRA is set to conduct a public hearing in Karachi on November 11 to review the proposal and gather feedback from stakeholders.
An SSGC official noted,
“The proposed adjustment is necessary to maintain supply stability during the peak winter season and manage the company’s cost of operations.”
The move comes as gas demand typically surges in the colder months, with SSGC struggling to balance supply across domestic and industrial sectors. The final decision on the proposed hike will rest with OGRA following the public hearing.
