The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet has deferred the decision to ban the import of three-year-old used cars under the Personal Baggage, Transfer of Residence, and Gift Schemes, allowing more time for consultations with key stakeholders.

The meeting, chaired by Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, reviewed the Commerce Division’s proposal to amend the Import Policy Order 2022. The suggested changes aimed to regulate the import of vehicles under schemes commonly used by overseas Pakistanis.

After detailed discussions, the ECC directed the Commerce Division to hold further consultations with relevant stakeholders before resubmitting the proposal for final approval.

“The matter requires broader input to ensure fair facilitation for overseas Pakistanis and protection for the local auto industry,” an official from the ministry stated.

Sources in the Ministry of Commerce confirmed that the government seeks to balance foreign exchange management with support for expatriates who rely on these schemes to send vehicles home. The deferred decision indicates a cautious approach amid the ongoing challenges in Pakistan’s automobile sector and import policy reforms.

The ECC meeting also approved several technical supplementary grants (TSGs) for development and operational needs, including funding for the Election Commission of Pakistan, Pakistan Navy, and Pakistan Rangers.
