The violent scenes unfolded yesterday on the street of Avenida Paula Ferreira in the north of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s[2] largest city.
Cops have described how the off-duty officer[3], named as Luiz Fernando Souza Nunes de Viveiros, was inside a mobile phone store when he saw two men confronting a delivery driver who had just left the premises.

The man died at the scene. The second suspect, named as 40-year-old Joao Renato Macedo dos Reis, tried his best to flee on foot but was chased and held down by members of the public a short distance away.
He tried to fire a gun of his own at the officer the weapon failed to discharge, according to the official report.
The area was cordoned off as forensic teams were called to the scene and investigators gathered evidence.
In a statement, the Sao Paulo State Department of Public Security confirmed that the suspects had resisted the approach and that one died at the scene while the other was arrested in the act.
