Director Says Pedro Pascal’s Exit Plunged ‘Weapons’ Into Turmoil: “had to start over again”

In the dynamic world of Hollywood, even the most anticipated projects can face unexpected hurdles, leading to significant changes behind the scenes. Filmmaker Zach Cregger’s highly anticipated horror epic, Weapons, is set to hit theaters, but not with the cast originally envisioned. Recent reports hint at a dramatic shift behind the scenes, a complete overhaul of the film’s lineup that forced the director to start over again.

Production Challenges for Weapons

Director Zach Cregger spoke in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Hollywood strikes caused significant production delays, forcing Cregger to make difficult decisions regarding the film’s lineup. He said, “I had to start over again”. This unforeseen interruption necessitated a complete re-evaluation of the project’s casting. The WGA strike, which began on May 2 and concluded on September 27, overlapped with the SAG-AFTRA strike that lasted from July 14 to November 9, 2023. The extensive delays resulting from the strikes created scheduling conflicts for the original actors, particularly Pedro Pascal. This interruption made it impossible for Pascal to proceed with the film Weapons, and he had to continue with his previous schedules, necessitating a full recasting of the roles. 

Director Zach Cregger confirmed that his upcoming horror movie, Weapons, initially featured a different ensemble of actors. This original cast included notable names such as Pedro Pascal, Brian Tyree Henry, Austin Abrams, and Renate Reinsve. Pedro Pascal was originally slated to portray the father of a missing child, a role now taken over by Josh Brolin due to scheduling issues. The director expressed no ill will, acknowledging such delays are an inherent part of the filmmaking process.

Despite production setbacks on one project, the beloved actor is set to appear in a variety of exciting new films.

Pedro Pascal’s diverse upcoming projects

Pedro Pascal has a busy schedule ahead, with several intriguing films slated for release. He will star as Mayor Ted Garcia in Ari Aster’s Eddington, a film expected to premiere later in 2025. This project, featuring a cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler, promises a unique cinematic experience characteristic of Aster’s distinctive style.

Pedro Pascal is also set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will appear in Avengers: Doomsday in May 2026, where Robert Downey Jr. returns as Doctor Doom. Furthermore, Pascal reprises his role as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian & Grogu, a big-screen continuation of the popular series arriving in May 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2027.
