We’re Rich

The musician revisits the cut from her debut album, several months after releasing LP, Bloodless, in April

A TikTok clip of a two-year-old Tiny Desk performance has revived Samia‘s “Pool.” On Tuesday, the indie star released a stripped-down version of the favorite, following the resurgence of the emotional performance of the song from November 2023.

“Pool” originally appeared on Samia’s 2020 debut album The Baby. But a live snippet of her performing “Pool” — particularly the lines, “How long do I have left with my dog ’til I start forgetting shit?/How long ’til we’re rich and then we’re not and then we’re rich?” — for NPR has taken on a life of its own, with thousands of fans using the emotional rendition as the sound for the melancholic TikToks.

The official stripped version of “Pool” comes about a month before Samia is set to return to her North American tour with stops in Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Nashville in September and October.

Samia also released an LP this year, Bloodless, featuring songs such as “Bovine Excision” and “Lizard,” and spoke to Rolling Stone about the poetic inspirations behind the music on the record.

“I started thinking about my experience with womanhood on a larger scale,” she said earlier this year. “I had so much shame about being worried about men and maybe having altered myself in some way because of it.”

Rolling Stone named Samia one of the Future 25, lauding her as “one of indie rock’s most poignant songwriters,” back in 2024. “People make fun of me because they’re like, ‘You always look like you’re in disbelief,’ and I am,” she said at the time. “I’m really genuinely surprised. I write songs when I feel crazy. The best-case scenario is being met with a cacophony of strangers’ voices being like, ‘You’re not crazy.’”
