Morocco made history on Sunday by defeating Argentina 2-0 to win the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile — their first-ever title at any FIFA tournament.
Two first-half goals from Yassir Zabiri sealed a famous victory for coach Mohamed Ouahbi’s team at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago.
With the win, Morocco became only the second African nation to lift the trophy, following Ghana’s triumph in 2009.
The match started at a fast pace, with both sides showing attacking intent. Morocco took the lead in the 12th minute when Zabiri was fouled on the edge of the box by Argentine goalkeeper Santino Barbi. After a VAR review, Barbi received a yellow card, and Zabiri curled the free-kick beautifully into the top corner.
Morocco doubled their advantage in the 29th minute. Ismael Baouf won the ball in midfield and set up Othmane Maamma, whose cross found Zabiri to score his second goal of the night.
Argentina tried to respond through Mateo Silvetti and Gianluca Prestianni, but Morocco’s goalkeeper Ibrahim Gomis made several crucial saves to keep his side ahead.
The South Americans dominated possession in the second half but failed to break through Morocco’s strong defence. Zabiri came close to completing a hat-trick, while Argentina substitute Ian Subiabre missed a clear chance late in the game.
Morocco stayed calm and defended solidly until the final whistle, sparking wild celebrations among players and fans.
Awards and Recognition
After the match, Argentina’s Santino Barbi was named Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament. Morocco’s Othmane Maamma, who assisted the second goal, received the Golden Ball award for Best Player. The United States won the Fair Play Trophy.
Morocco’s triumph continues the country’s impressive progress in football. Their senior men’s team reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, and their U17 team also reached the semi-finals of the 2025 U17 World Cup.
This U20 World Cup victory marks Morocco’s first global football title and a proud moment for African football.
