Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has said that his first goal against Karagumruk on Saturday was not the best goal of his career, even though many fans were impressed by it.
Onuachu was the star of the match as his club Trabzonspor came from behind to win against Karagumruk at the Ataturk Stadium.
After Karagumruk scored first, the Nigerian forward helped turn things around by scoring two goals before half-time, putting his team back in front.
The first of those goals caught everyone’s attention – Onuachu reacted quickly to a cross from Wagner Pina, jumping high to score a beautiful overhead kick that surprised the goalkeeper.
Onuachu: My Best Goal Was Against Konyaspor
Even though many fans loved the goal, Onuachu doesn’t think it’s the best one he has ever scored.
The 31-year-old, who used to play for Southampton, said his goal against Konyaspor last year was better. That goal was so special it was even nominated for the FIFA Puskas Award, where it finished 10th place.
“I’m happy the team won, and I’m even happier I scored,” Onuachu told Turkish outlet Fanatik.
“I watched the goal again – thank you for reminding me! But I still think the one against Konyaspor was better.”
Could This Goal Be Nominated for the Puskas Award?
Although Onuachu’s overhead kick was a great goal, it is unlikely to be nominated for the FIFA Puskas Award.
These types of goals are scored often in football, and the Puskas Award usually recognises goals that are truly unique or spectacular.
So, if Onuachu wants to be in the running again, he’ll probably need to score another stunner before the year ends.
