Most associate the American Express Platinum Card®[1] with luxury and high-end benefits[2]. After all, the card is known for its lounge access, hotel elite status offerings and having access to valuable transfer partners.
The card’s up to $155 per calendar year Walmart+ statement credit*, however, doesn’t fit neatly into the Platinum’s reputation for prestige. That means many current and prospective cardmembers overlook it.
Failing to use your Amex Platinum’s Walmart+ statement credit may mean losing out on the opportunity to save money[3] every month. Here’s what you need to know about this benefit to decide whether it’s worth using.
What is Walmart+?
Walmart+ offers a variety of benefits for a monthly fee of $12.95 per month (plus local sales tax). Most of these perks are centered on Walmart shopping, but some of them focus on partner brands.

In 2021, the Amex Platinum[4] began offering cardmembers monthly statement credits of up to $12.95 (plus local sales tax) toward a Walmart+ membership*. That means you’re able to receive a Walmart+ membership for no extra out of pocket cost.
*Enrollment required; subject to auto-renewal. Plus-Ups excluded; statement credit is only applicable for one monthly membership.

Walmart+ benefits
There are multiple benefits[6] for Walmart+ members to leverage. These can be useful when you’re shopping at Walmart, and some can even be used outside of the store. Here’s a list:
- Auto care perks, such as free flat tire repair and a free road hazard warranty when you purchase new tires with installation. This perk is available at all 2,500 Walmart Auto Care Centers.
- Free next-day and two-day shipping on items from Walmart.com, with no minimum spending required.
- Free grocery delivery[7] from your local Walmart store on orders of $35 or more. It’s important to note that if you don’t have a Walmart store nearby, you won’t be able to take advantage of store delivery.
- Free Burger King Whopper with any purchase every three months, as well as 25% off Burger King every day at participating locations.
- Fuel savings, with up to 10 cents off per gallon at Exxon, Mobil, Sam’s Club, Murphy and Walmart gas stations[8].
- Online pet care for free through Pawp, with unlimited telehealth access for your pet 24/7.
- Option to make returns from home without printing a label or repackaging.
- Paramount+ Essential plan subscription or a Peacock Premium subscription.
- Pluto TV access for advertising-free streaming.
- Walmart Cash incentive when you book through W+ Travel (powered by Expedia). Earn up to 5% Walmart Cash on hotels, flights, car rentals and tours when you use W+ Travel to book.

Walmart+ members will also receive exclusive offers. In the past, we’ve seen a three-month trial of Apple News+, a five-month trial of Apple Arcade, 25% off four months of Hallmark+, six months of SiriusXM free, $20 off live events booked through Tickets For Less and $10 in Walmart Cash when you book bus or train trip tickets through Busbud.
Along with these benefits, Walmart+ members can also use their phones to scan items in-store and check out contact-free.

How to get Walmart+ with the Amex Platinum
To get started, navigate to the “Benefits” tab of your online Amex Platinum account or go directly to this Walmart landing page[12].
From here, click “Get Started” and follow a series of prompts to sign up for a Walmart+ subscription. You must also create a Walmart account if you don’t already have one.

Next, you’ll be asked to enter your payment information. You need to pay with your Amex Platinum to receive your monthly $12.95 statement credit.
Important note: Make sure to opt for the monthly plan, since you won’t receive a statement credit for the annual plan.
Once you’ve completed these steps, you should be all set. Monitor your account to make sure your statement credit posts, and contact Amex’s customer support if you don’t see it after a few weeks.

Bottom line
While it may not scream luxury, the Amex Platinum’s Walmart+ benefit can provide significant value. That’s especially true if you’re a fan of the included partner brands, such as Peacock and Burger King.
I didn’t expect[14] this perk to be worth a lot when I first opened my Platinum Card, but I was quickly proven wrong. Assuming you shop at Walmart at least once a month and have either a Peacock or Paramount+ subscription, you should be able to get positive value out of this perk.
